If you do not qualify for an SSN, you will need to apply for an ITIN. The IRS launched the Direct File pilot program during the 2024 tax season. The pilot will give eligible taxpayers an option to prepare and electronically file their 2023 tax returns, for free, directly with the IRS. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, helps individuals who generally make $65,000 or less, have disabilities or speak limited or no English, no matter which state they’re filing in. IRS-certified volunteers provide basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.
You can leave all the tax ID numbers on your 1040 tax return blank. Once your ITIN is assigned, you’ll use it in those boxes on future returns. You will usually file an ITIN application, Form W-7, Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, with your first tax return, which you must file as a paper return, not electronically. For most individuals, their TIN is a social security number (SSN). A foreign person, who doesn’t have and can’t get an SSN, must use an individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN). A foreign person may be a resident alien for income tax purposes based on days present in the United States.
Low Income Taxpayer Clinics (LITCs) are independent from the IRS and TAS. LITCs represent individuals whose income is below a certain level and who need to resolve tax problems with the IRS. LITCs can represent taxpayers in audits, appeals, and tax collection disputes before the IRS and in court. In addition, LITCs can provide information about taxpayer rights and responsibilities in different languages for individuals who speak English as a second language. We strongly suggest that you get certified copies of all your documents instead of sending originals. The same timing rule also applies to the Other Dependent Credit. If a taxpayer or qualifying child qualifies for an SSN or ITIN but waits to apply, the taxpayer may not be able to claim this credit, even if they are otherwise eligible. Also, the credit cannot be claimed later if the taxpayer or qualifying child gets an SSN or ITIN from the IRS after the due date of the tax return (including extensions). The IRS issues a preparer tax identification number (PTIN) to paid tax preparers aged 18 years or older. All individuals who prepare or assist with preparing federal tax returns in exchange for compensation must include their PTIN on clients’ returns.
Getting an ITIN
The umbrella term “taxpayer identification number” (TIN) signifies all tracking numbers used by the IRS to organize tax filings by individuals and entities.
